It is my pleasure to introduce Darylle Mak as my Special Guest for this week's Soiree. Darylle is the Founder and Artistic Director of Sidewinder Actors Theatre and is an accomplished actress. On stage and off she exudes style and flair that attracts those looking for adventure. She is a free spirit with a heart of gold who's love of the theatre shows in her dynamic stage productions and acting skills.
Darylle plays the leading lady in Sidewinder Actors Theatre's area premiere of David Mamet's powerful "Oleanna", this April in Carefree. Unfolding with modern bite and contemporary twists, this modern take on the age-old story of the sexual power struggle between men and women is presented at the City Center Amphitheater in Carefree. Critics have called Oleanna a sexual minefield, psychological thriller taut, intellectual sparring match. This sharp, shock of a play delivers a knockout punch."
Oleanna is often considered one of Mamet's most controversial and strongest works. One of America's most prolific and successful writers, his plays include Glengarry Glen Ross, American Buffalo, and Sexual Perversity in Chicago. Among the many films he has scripted are The Verdict, Wag The Dog, and Hannibal.
Ms. Mak, the Artistic Director of Sidewinder Actors Theatre, has a fresh, innovative approach for the staging of Mamet's controversial play. Of her decision to stage the play in Carefree, she explains, "This is a contemporary theater production popping with energy and a bit of spring sting, perfect for the amphitheater-a feisty frolic of literary wit, sexual tension and a touch of nastiness. I think is an important play for this moment in time because it asks us how far are we willing to go get what we want, and when is it too far?
Darylle Mak credits include several strong female lead performances, among them Marjorie in Mastrosimone's Extremities which the Santa Fe New Mexican called "outstanding." Performing on stages across the world, Ms. Mak has assayed the role of the vibrant quintessential adventurer Alex in Overmeyer's On the Verge in the South of France. She has also appeared on various national and international stages as she delighted audiences with eclectic character work in productions like Skin by Ping Cong & Meredith Monk at La Mama Experimental Theatre in New York, and as Clara at the Sydney Festival in Australia with Ells Comedienne's of Spain. |
